To conduct a focus group from start to finish there are three main steps; the preparation, the administration, and the interpretation and sharing of the results. Below is a list of things to consider for each step of the process.


  • Determine the logicitics (number of focus groups, where the focus groups will be help
  • Identify who will be your participants and recruitment strategies
  • Generate your questions and script
  • Determine who will be the facilitator
  • Determine how you will take notes

Conduct the Focus Group

  • Bring all materials and set up the space
  • Introductions
  • Receive informed consent if necessary
  • Conduct the session
  • Thank all participants

Interpretations and Reporting

  • Immediately following the focus group create a summarization of the session
  • Transcribe the notes
  • Analyze the summaries
  • Write the report or other methods of sharing the results
  • Make decisions/adjustments based on focus group results
